|
|
|
||
| FEATURING
(Voices): Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill |
||
| Based on the classic children's tale by Dr. Seuss, HORTON HEARS A WHO tells the story of Horton, a friendly elephant who one-day hears a cry for help coming from a small speck of dust. Upon closer investigation he discovers an entire race of microscopic 'Whos', living atop it. Horton befriends the Whos and protects their tiny world, but his jungle neighbors worry he's gone crazy, believing in things that don't exist. Assuming that nothing so small could possibly be alive, Horton's friends conspire to destroy the speck of dust in order to rouse him from his delusions. | ||

The movie proves a
funny, elevating ride that should beguile the young and keep their parents
or grandparents enthralled too. For once, the G rating stands for Glorious. Horton Hears a Who!
is razzle-dazzling and artful, and it builds on Seuss' words by the clever
cart-full. If I ran the circus,
the gang that made the sturdy, witty, inventively animated Dr. Seuss'
Horton Hears a Who! would get first dibs on any future movie productions
of the Theodor Seuss Geisel canon. |

Married Life is an
engaging romance noir, a sort of updated The Postman Always Rings Twice
that packs its surprises into four characters, none of them predictable.
Cooper and Clarkson
are sublime in creating a marriage still filled with tenderness, even
as they lie to each other with breezy consistency. |

Eminently likable.
And there's something about Gondry's persistent nostalgia that feels contemporary,
or opportune, at least. For a film
that is basically about a hip, New Wave fairy princess, Penelope has both
old-fashioned charm and a freshly modern approach to the subject of media
manipulation and celebrity culture. I think it’s a sweet
film. |

For what it is --
a romantic comedy about the rivalry between a jealous ghost and a flaky
psychic for the love of a veterinarian -- Over Her Dead Body is not bad.
This is a film that's
completely happy being its silly little self. And if it produces some
giggles along the way -- and it does -- it has done its job. |

CANVAS | |

Joe Pantoliano, |
||
| When Mary's (Marcia Gay Harden) mental illness puts herself and her family in jeopardy, her husband (Joe Pantoliano) and son (Devon Gearhart) helplessly watch as she's torn from the family by the police. Forced to raise a boy on his own and cope with his wife's schizophrenia, father and son learn what it is to truly be a family. Inspired by a true story, Joseph Greco's drama is full of humor and hope as it is heartbreaking performances. | ||

Genre:

Canvas is a serious
film about mental illness and a sentimental heartwarmer, and succeeds
in both ways. Writer-director Joseph
Greco makes a nice feature-film debut telling a true, disturbing story
about a 10-year-old boy struggling to cope with a schizophrenic mother. Auds will experience
the joy of discovery in Greco's fact-based drama -- not just in its perspective
on schizophrenia and the effect of the disease on one Florida family,
but in Joe Pantoliano's cliche-demolishing performance. |
